Wing Council Roadmen - 1935

L to R: Back row - Fred Corkett, ?,?,?, Charlie Sawyer. Front row: Squash Pease, Ebbin French,?, Jack Syratt

The roadmen under their foreman, Fred Corkett, were responsible for the highways and byways of the parish. They could be seen cleaning out drains and gullies, mending potholes, maintaining signs, sweeping and keeping an eye on comings and goings in the village. Unkindly perhaps, they were said to spend most time leaning on their shovels or brewing tea on the braziers.
