WING
NOTES
4 APRIL 2007
ANN WEIGHT
With Ruth away,
enjoying a well-earned rest, it's me again taking care of Wing
Notes. I must admit that there have been times when I have missed
doing the weekly column, but on the whole I, too, am enjoying the
rest.
Although the schools are on holiday, Overstone School PTA is
looking ahead to their 1st event of the summer term, which will
be a Barn Dance on 28th April. Barn Dances are always a good way
to meet new people, so even if you are new to the village, go and
"strip the willow", take along your children,
refreshments and friends, but partners are not necessary and
light supper is included. Tickets are available from the school,
from the post office or from Henny (01296 688691).
Wing WI will also be concentrating on the theme entertainment on
19th April with a talk on the "History of the Music
Hall" by Mrs Woodward. The competition will be a hat to wear
to the Music Hall.
Has anyone spotted the confusion in "What's on in Wing"
over Easter services at All Saints' Church? By the time you read
this Easter Day, on 8th April, will have passed. According to the
new timetable for services, on 15th April there will be Holy
Communion at 8am and 10.45am in Wing.
Parish Council
Two items in the agenda of last month's meeting merit a mention.
Firstly, the redevelopment of Wing Lodge and then the continuing
objections and alternative plans for the bypass. Although
consultations have already started with the residents of Wing
Lodge it is early days in the process. During a short
presentation plans of the proposed design were shown to the
Council together with information about the proposed development.
The Lodge will be completely rebuilt to modern standards with
facilities and access to match. There will be roughly twice the
number of rooms, all with en-suite facilities, in 3 wings and
there will be a central communal area. Unfortunately, the work
will take about 18 months during which the lodge will close.
Further consultation will take place before plans are submitted
to the planning department.
If you drive through the villages to either side of the A418 you
will have seen the signs of opposition to one or other of the
proposed routes, which will take traffic away from our streets.
The County Council has looked at the Cheddington Railway route
and found it wanting and will look at other proposals and
objections. Our Parish Council is concerned that all this effort
will delay further the start of the bypass for which we have been
waiting for so long. The Council intends to send a representative
to any meetings but made it clear that the most important thing
was that the bypass is built.
Forthcoming events:
Wednesday 17th April: Age Concern Pop-in, Small Hall, 2-4pm
Thursday 19th April: Wing WI, Small Hall 7.30pm (see above)

The Wing Players
recently presented Gavyn Lugsden's interpretation of 'Jack and
the Beanstalk'. It was a wonderful and entertaining experience
full of fun and enjoyment. One of it's best features was the
ability to please all ages. With the classic pantomime style that
the children enjoy and the addition of innuendos and puns that
created a more adult like humour
As usual there were the classic characters. The 'goodies' and the
'badies' and a rather amusing role reversal of a princess named
Daisy and a cow named princess. The cow was played by Hannah
Dorsett and Jess Grant, who managed a dance very well considering
they were in a costume. Eileen, Jack's mother played by the
playwright himself ,Gavyn suited the 'drag' character rather
well. Well done to the trainee fairy Shauna for surviving till
the end of the play. At one point I was worried to whether she
would stay awake; but she did.
As is the case with all performances what the audience sees is
just the tip of the iceberg. Underneath is all the practice time
that has been put in and all the hard work from those directing
and designing. Well done to Emma Taylor for directing the play. I
am sure that ,that would have been a tough job. Also a big well
done to the lighting and sound management , refreshments, props
and set design and costume designers. The performance showed a
clear indication that all the members of the Wing Players are
enthusiastic at putting on a very good performance; in which no
one forgot their lines!
